Q: I see you are in Ellet, Ohio. Where's that?

A: We are based in Ellet which is a suburb of Akron, Ohio. We are right down the road from the old Rubber Bowl and from Derby Downs where the All-American Soap Box Derby is held every year. We are minutes from the Akron-Canton airport and a half hour drive from Cleveland, Ohio.

Don't worry if you are not local, we work with people from all across the country. After years of working with clients remotely we have developed efficient means of communication and are able to provide a comfortable environment for everyone involved.

Q: Who is Glick?

A: Glick Productions is a web development company located in Ellet, Ohio. We were founded in 2001 by Rick Berg and Glenn Hartong. We specialize in small to mid-range companies with a variety of needs from a simple web presence to an online shopping experience.

Q: Can you design my logo?

A: Glick Productions offers many graphic design services in addition to corporate branding services. We are skilled at creating logos, letterhead, business cards and much more.

Q: What are your prices?

A: Our design/development and maintenance fees are $100 per hour. Domain registration is free with purchase of an eligible Glick hosting plan, which (as of July 1, 2009) generally costs less than $30/month.

Q: What is a domain name?

A: A domain name is the name of your site: www.glickproductions.us, for example.

You can't just pick up the phone and start talking to the person you've called - you need to dial the person's phone number. Like a phone number, a domain name tells your internet browser web which server and files you seek.

Q: What is hosting?

A: The files for your web site are stored on a web server so other computers can access them via the internet. You rent the space on the web server that holds your files. This process is known as hosting a web site.

Q: What is updating?

A: Updating is also known as site maintenance. Many websites need to be changed on a monthly, weekly or even daily basis. Such modifications may be minor or may be more substantive in nature.

Regularly scheduled changes to a web site, called updates, are available through Glick Productions. However, we always attempt to create your site in such a way as to allow you to make updates yourself. This is called content management systems (CMS). A CMS can be built into an existing site and is usually suggested with all new projects.

Q: How do I get started?

A: Before you contact Glick, or any other web developer, you'll want to answer a few questions.

  • Who will be coming to my site?
  • What do I want them to be able to do?
  • What do I want to be able to do?
  • What domain name would I like for my site?

You will also want to try to decide on basic color schemes and layouts. Search the web for sites that seem similar to what you are trying to accomplish. Just surf the net in general and find out what strikes your attention. Make a list of items you have seen that you love as well as those that you hate.

Q: How long is the building process?

A: A basic site typically takes 5 to 8 weeks for completion, though complex interactive sites obviously can require a longer time-frame.

Delays in receiving data from the client can sometimes result in delays of project completion. If you are embarking on building a site, it helps to have everything ready before you talk to a developer. You should consider, at minimum:

  • What do you want the site to look like?
  • Do you want to find new members? Create awareness? Sell things?
  • Who is your intended audience?
  • What existing materials do you want to use on the site - PDFs, text, images - in addition to your contact information?

Being prepared will save you time and money when meeting with a web developer.

Q: What types of programming knowledge do you posses?

A: Glick Productions uses the most current variety of programs and programming languages of the industry. We work with Adobe Dreamweaver®, Adobe Flash®, Javascript, AJAX, JSON, PHP, Adobe ColdFusion®, and Adobe Photoshop® CS to name of few of our favorites. For database connections we use Access, MSSQL and MySQL. As designers, we are constantly testing new software to keep abreast of advances in an ever-changing field.

Q: What is ColdFusion?

A: In a nut shell..."ColdFusion is an application server and software development framework used for the development of computer software in general, and dynamic web sites in particular. In this regard, ColdFusion is a similar product to Microsoft ASP.NET, Java Enterprise Edition or PHP. The primary feature of ColdFusion is its associated scripting language, ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML), which compares to JSP, C#, or PHP and resembles HTML in syntax." (excerpt from Wikipedia)

Q: What is JSON?

A: "JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) (Pronounced like the boy's name Jason) is a lightweight computer data interchange format. It is a text-based, human-readable format for representing simple data structures and associative arrays (called objects). The JSON format is often used for transmitting structured data over a network connection in a process called serialization. Its main application is in Ajax web application programming, where it serves as an alternative to the traditional use of the XML format." (excerpt from Wikipedia)
